How to Start Bible Journaling: A Simple Guide for Studying Scripture

Most people don’t quit Bible study because they don’t care. They quit because they sit down, open to a page, and don’t know what to write. If that’s you, the fix isn’t more discipline — it’s a simple structure. Here’s how to start Bible journaling in a way you’ll actually keep up with.

What is Bible journaling?

Bible journaling simply means writing down what you’re reading and what God is showing you as you read it. It’s not about being artistic or having the right handwriting. It’s about slowing down enough to notice, reflect, and respond — so Scripture moves from your eyes to your heart to your week.

What to write in a Bible study journal

You only need four things on the page:

  • The verse or passage — what you read today.
  • What stood out — the word, phrase, or idea that caught you.
  • Your reflection — what it means and what it stirs up.
  • A prayer or response — how you’ll talk to God about it or live it out.

That’s it. Four lines beat a blank page every single time.

A simple method: SOAP

If you want a method with a name, SOAP is the classic one: Scripture (write the verse), Observation (what do you notice?), Application (how does it apply to your life?), and Prayer (respond to God). Read a short passage — even a few verses — and walk it through those four steps. It works for a single verse or a whole chapter.

How to remember what you read

Reading and forgetting is normal; writing is what makes it stay. When you put the verse in your own words and name one thing you’ll do with it, you’re far more likely to carry it into the day. Re-reading a few of your past entries each week is a quiet way to see how God has been speaking over time.

How to build a routine that sticks

Start absurdly small. Five minutes and one guided page, at the same time each day, is better than an hour you’ll never repeat. Don’t aim for a perfect streak — aim for a place you keep coming back to. Missing a day isn’t failure; it’s just Tuesday. Open it again tomorrow.

A note from me

Journaling through Scripture is how I found peace in a season when I didn’t have answers. The guided pages came from my own need — I wanted somewhere I always knew what to write. If a simple, guided place would help you, our Bible Notes Journal gives you a prompt for the verse, what stood out, your reflection, and your prayer on every page. If you also take notes on Sundays, the Church + Bible Notes Duo pairs it with a sermon journal, and you can browse everything in the full journals collection.
