When I read the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3, it hits me every time. These three men faced a brutal choice: bow to Nebuchadnezzar's golden idol or be thrown into a blazing furnace. The king even taunted them, basically saying, "Who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?" (v. 15)
Their response? Courageous obedience. They told him, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up" (vv. 16–18)
That "but if not" captures my attention. They fully believed God could rescue them—and they trusted He would in His way. But their obedience wasn't conditional on the outcome. Even if the flames consumed them, they wouldn't compromise. Their loyalty to God stood firm, no matter what.
It's a reminder for me (and maybe for you too) that God's goodness doesn't depend on whether He delivers us the way we expect. He is able. He is faithful. And even when the "if not" moments come—when prayers aren't answered as we'd hoped, when the furnace feels too hot—He is still good, and we are called to trust Him.
What "but if not" situation are you facing right now? May we have the same courage to stand firm, trusting His character above all.
